Utako Market

I took a quick visit to the market after my early morning workout.

I walked into the market with no specific plan. I just wanted to see what was there. I wanted to get vegetables. I wanted to check prices. I wanted to experience the whole thing. And what I found was so much more than I expected.

I saw a lot of fascinating things, and one of the most interesting was an artisan who sharpens knives for marketers.

There’s something beautiful about watching someone do their craft. The way they focus. The way they move. The way they just know what they’re doing without having to think about it. Knife sharpening is one of those skills that doesn’t get talked about much in everyday conversation, but it’s absolutely essential to the market ecosystem.

That’s the kind of thing you see at markets that you don’t see in regular stores. The process. The craft. The human touch. The real skill that’s been passed down through generations. A woman grinding egusi with her local machine was another moment that captured my attention.

egusi is one of those ingredients that you either grind yourself or buy pre-ground. And there’s a difference between the two. When you grind it yourself, you know exactly what you’re getting. You know the quality. You know the freshness. And watching someone grind it with their local machine was really cool.

The machine was local. It was probably bought years ago. It’s been used countless times. And it still works. That’s the kind of durability you get with traditional tools. Things that are made to last. Things that are made for the work they’re supposed to do.

A small shop built on his hand. He’s holding the cosmetics, and that’s his display. That’s his shop. He walks around with it. He shows it to people. I teased him, asking to know if he could give me a foundation to suit my skin tone. And he was friendly about it. He was open. He was willing to help and that’s the kind of interaction you get at markets.

I also got vegetables, broccoli, and red cabbage. They were so fresh and I just thought of making salad with them.

That’s the value of markets. You’re not just getting food. You’re getting quality. You’re getting freshness. You’re getting the kind of produce that makes cooking enjoyable.

I priced plantain and the seller said 1 piece was ₦1,500.

I could not believe my ears.

I ran away.

After this visit, I think I prefer Utako Market over Wuse Market.

In my opinion, Utako Market is not as chaotic. It’s more affordable. And the people seem friendlier.

Let me break down what I mean.

Utako Market is more affordable. The prices I saw at Utako Market were better. The plantain was reasonable. The vegetables were priced fairly. The egusi was affordable. And the whole experience felt like I was getting good value for my money.

At Wuse Market, I saw prices that were higher. The plantain was ₦1,500 per piece. That’s not affordable. That’s not reasonable. That’s way above what should be charged. And I’m sure there are other items that are similarly overpriced.

Why Utako Market Works Better for Me

Utako Market works better for me because of all these reasons.

It’s less chaotic. It’s more affordable. The people are friendlier. And the whole experience is better.

I can move around. I can find what I’m looking for. I can get good prices. And I can have pleasant interactions with the sellers.

That’s what I want when I go to the market. And that’s what Utako Market gives me.

What’s your go-to market in Abuja? Why do you prefer it? What do you like about it? What don’t you like about the other markets?

Because markets are personal. They’re about what you need. They’re about what you want. They’re about what makes sense for you. And everyone’s experience is different.

Desserts after a good meal?

Sign me up!

There are certain moments in life where you just know you need something sweet. Not because you’re hungry. Not because you’re trying to fill a gap after a long day. But because the day felt good, the meal was satisfying, and now your body is asking for that final touch, something soft, something warm, something that feels like a little celebration at the end of it all.

It’s the kind of feeling that doesn’t need a big reason. It doesn’t need to be a special occasion. It just needs to be the kind of day where you’re allowed to end things on a note that feels soft and pleasant. And for me, that note is usually dessert.

That was the mood when my friend and I headed to Sal’s Churros & Sippy Fizzle.

My Friend Mentioned a Place She Wanted to Try, So I Offered to Be Her Plus One

My friend had mentioned that she saw a place and wanted to try it out, so I offered to be her plus one.

We had been talking about it for a few days. She had sent me a picture of the space, and it looked cute. Not in a loud, flashy way. Not in a way that screamed for attention. But in a quiet, intentional kind of way that made me curious. The kind of place that looks like it was designed for people who value comfort over chaos.

I wasn’t expecting much. Just a quick dessert stop, maybe something cute, maybe something new. But I wasn’t ready for how cute and cozy the space was.

From the moment we walked in, it felt like the kind of place that was designed for slow afternoons, easy conversations, and the kind of comfort that makes you want to stay longer than planned. The colours were soft. The lighting was warm. The seating felt inviting. And there was this quiet energy that made the whole space feel like it was meant for people who wanted to relax, talk, and just be.

It’s rare to find a spot that feels that considered. Most places try too hard. They add too much. They make things loud when they don’t need to be. But Sal’s Churros & Sippy Fizzle felt different. It felt like someone paid attention to how the space would feel, not just how it would look. And that made a difference.

We Waited for Our Churros to Be Ready (Served Hot with Two Dips)

We waited a while for our churros to be ready as it was to be served hot.

There’s something special about dessert that’s made fresh and served warm. It feels more intentional. More cared for. It’s not just something that was sitting there waiting to be picked up. It’s something that was made for you, right then, with the kind of attention that makes you feel like you’re getting something that was prepared with care.

The churros came with two dips, and while both were good, I preferred the caramel option. It was rich, smooth, and paired perfectly with the warm, slightly crispy texture of the churros. The caramel had that deep, sweet flavour that doesn’t feel too heavy. It’s the kind of dip that makes you want to take your time with it, to let each bite feel like a little moment.

We chatted away and soon it was nightfall.

The conversation flowed easily. There was no pressure to rush. No sense that we needed to be anywhere else. Just the kind of quiet, comfortable time that happens when you’re with someone you enjoy being with, in a space that feels like it was made for moments like this.

In my opinion, this is a really cute spot for a chilled girl’s day out. The kind of place where time slows down, the conversation flows easily, and you don’t feel rushed to leave. It’s simple, but that simplicity is part of what makes it work.

I Would Have Tried More Things But I Was Over-Fed Already

We had come after a meal. A good one. The kind that leaves you feeling full and satisfied. And by the time we got to the churros, I was already in that space where you’re enjoying dessert more for the experience than for the need. It’s the kind of.fullness that makes every bite feel like a choice, not a necessity. And that’s actually a good thing.

We got the mini lux churros box and it was N5500.

That price feels fair for what you get — a small, curated box of warm churros with dips, perfect for sharing or enjoying on your own. It’s not too expensive, but it’s also not cheap. It sits in that sweet spot where you feel like you’re treating yourself without overdoing it. You’re not paying for something that feels like a luxury. You’re paying for something that feels like a little moment of kindness to yourself.

It is a cozy spot and the drinks looked good so I think I will give it a try next time.

The drink menu had that quiet kind of appeal, nothing loud, nothing trying too hard, just thoughtful options that looked like they’d pair well with the churros. I’m definitely curious to see how they taste next time. There’s something about a place that takes care of both the dessert and the drinks. It shows that they’re thinking about the whole experience, not just one part of it.

Are You a Dessert Girlie?

If you’re the type who always ends the meal with something sweet. If you love finding cosy spots that feel like little escapes. If you enjoy the kind of place where you can sit, chat, and let the evening slow down, then yes, this is for you.

Sal’s Churros & Sippy Fizzle is the kind of dessert shop that doesn’t need to be loud to make an impression. It just needs to be good at what it does, and it is.

The churros were warm. The dips were good. The space was cosy. The vibe was easy. And the whole experience felt like the kind of little moment that you don’t plan for but end up remembering.

It’s the kind of place that fits neatly into your day. You don’t need to make it a big event. You don’t need to dress up or prepare too much. You just show up, order something sweet, sit down, talk a little, and let the evening unfold the way it wants to.

That’s the kind of outing I enjoy more and more these days. Not everything has to be elaborate to be memorable. Sometimes a good dessert, a pretty space, and a warm conversation are enough to make the whole visit worth it.

And in a city like Abuja, where people are often balancing busy schedules, traffic, errands, and general life stress, little places like this become valuable. They give you a chance to pause. To reset. To eat something sweet. To breathe for a few minutes before diving back into everything else.

What I liked most about this place was not just the churros, but the feeling it gave me. It felt calm, pretty, and intentional in a way that made the experience enjoyable from the moment I stepped in. The dessert was good, the space was lovely, and the vibe was warm enough to make the whole visit feel easy.

Would I go back? Definitely.

Especially to try the drinks.

Some places do not need to do too much to make an impression. They just need to be good at what they do and make you feel welcome while doing it. This spot did exactly that. It gave a warm dessert, a beautiful atmosphere, and a pleasant little break from the usual routine.
